Question
Answer Header & Date
Answer Snippet
Length of time for an extended deep plane facelift?
How long does a deep plane facelift take?
Apr 20, 2023
Your intuition is excellent and the answer is that you can call the surgery whatever you want but it is the result that matters. The term deep plane facelift has no formal meaning. The key results you should be focused on are: the neck, the jawline and jowls, the labiomental fold/marionette line and the cheek/nasolabial fold. The surgeon should be able to give you a general idea of how much each of these areas will be improved and demonstrate their ability by showing their own before and...
Why do most before and after photos of facelifts not show improvement of marionette lines?
The marionette line can be corrected with a facelift
Mar 4, 2023
The marionette line can be completely corrected with advanced facelift techniques and is the preferred approach as the chronic treatment of this area with fillers leads to a wide distorted appearance of the lower face.Specifically, the facelift dissection must be carried across the marionette line and usually the depressor anguli oris (DAO) needs to be released as this muscle causes the downturn of the marionette frown. These are not standard surgical techniques however they are extremely...
Will face and neck liposuction damage the SMAS layer, making a future facelift less effective?
Negative effect of facial liposuction
Jan 24, 2023
Liposuction of the face and neck will create a scar layer that makes doing a subsequent facelift more difficult. This is much more pronounced if liposuction with some sort of thermal assistance such as ultrasound or radio frequency is used.
Deep Plane DAO Release - are there any known long term complications?
Deep Plane facelift and DAO release
May 28, 2022
I have been working on this technique for about 10 years and in a few hundred deep plane facelifts. It has proven to be the most consistent and effective modification I have made to the operation in 25 years. The greatest risks would be more associated with the extended dissection needed to identify the DAO such as facial nerve injury but these are related to surgical skill and experience and not the procedure itself. I avoid doing the procedure in patients who actively engage their DAO when...
What are the indications for either a Deep Plan or a SMAS?
Why is a deep plane facelift indicated vs a SMAS
Mar 21, 2022
The key difference is that an extended Deep Plane facelift will reliably correct the marionette line or labiomental frown without the need for fillers which a SMAS lift will not. A Deep Plane facelift will also reposition the cheek fat pad to a more attractive position. Both surgeries are very effective in correcting the jawline (jowls) and neck.
SMAS VS DEEP PLANE Facelift - Is there a difference in complications and results?
Why should you choose a deep plane facelift
Sep 28, 2021
An extended deep plane facelift can surgically correct the marionette frown without the need for future fillers. A SMAS facelift will not achieve this. A deep plane facelift can also reposition the cheek fat pad. Success in achieving these type of results is dependent more on the surgeons ability to perform the surgery than which surgery they are doing. The issue of complications is also more related to the surgeons ability and experience with the procedure than the type of procedure. Most...
Is there scientific proof that Deep Plane Facelift has more advantages than a SMAS Lift? Thank you in
Deep Plane Advantages over SMAS
Aug 18, 2021
The best way to compare different facelifts is by examining what specifically the facelift surgery will address. In my experience, both Deep Plane and SMAS facelifts are very effective in addressing the neck and the jowl. The advantage of the Deep Plane facelift is that it can correct the marionette frown and reposition the cheek fat pad so that fillers are not needed. Scientific proof is hard to come by but well controlled before and after photos should be able to demonstrate the difference...
What’s the difference from a SMAS facelift and a DEEP PLANE facelift and is 49 too young?
Deep Plane vs SMAS facelift
Jul 13, 2021
The most significant difference between my Deep Plane facelift approach and a SMAS facelift is that the Deep Plane will reliably correct the marionette frown. This is often the earliest sign of aging, typically showing up in the late 40's - early 50's and you are not at all too young for a Deep Plane Facelift. Rather than focusing on the name of the surgery during consultation you should discuss your expectations. A facelift should correct the neck, jawline, marionette frown and lift the...
Is there a particular facelift technique that address marionette lines more specifically?
Extended Deep Plane Facelift to correct marionette lines
May 6, 2021
The only reliable surgical correction of marionette lines is an extended deep plane facelift with release of the Depressor Anguli Oris (DAO) muscle. This sounds intimidating and is outside the expertise of most facelift surgeons, however it is the routine approach I take in all of my facelift patients for the past 5 years. It is an extension of the Deep Plane facelift which I have performed for 25 years. I often remove filler that has been placed in the marionette line at the same time as...
What are these and would a mini lift help?
Marionette lines require an extended deep plane facelift
Mar 21, 2021
You are looking at marionette lines which are not corrected by any facelift except an extended deep plane facelift. Some doctors will combine fillers with lesser facelifts but this is not a complete correction and fillers will cause the lower face to appear more square. An extended deep plane facelift with release of the Depressor Anguli Oris (DAO) which is the muscle that is the primary cause of the marionette line will provide complete long lasting correction as well as fixing the jowls,...
Am I suitable for a mini face lift?
Correcting marionette lines with a facelift
Mar 10, 2021
The lines that you have circled are referred to as marionette lines and can be completely corrected by an extended deep plane facelift with release of the depressor anguli oris muscle (DAO). This is the standard approach to all faces in our practice. A mini-facelift or SMAS facelift will not correct them. Fillers provide limited improvement and tend to create a square appearance to the lower face.
A year post op theres no difference at all. What are my options then?
Correcting the marionette line with a Facelift
Feb 21, 2021
The after photo that you show is focused on the marionette line and shows you flexing a muscle called the depressor anguli oris (DAO) which is creating the wrinkle. Both the marionette fold and the wrinkle can be corrected during a facelift but requires an extended deep plane facelift and surgical release of the DAO muscle. This is my standard facelift approach but it is uncommon among surgeons. In the video there are some examples of patients with complete correction of very deep marionette...
What is the difference between a composite facelift and a deep plane facelift?
Deep Plane Facelift vs Composite Facelift
Jan 3, 2021
The names of the facelifts come from Sam Hamra, MD who popularized the surgery in the mid 1990’s. The Composite Facelift includes the muscle of the lower eyelid, the orbicularis oculi, into the Deep Plane Facelift to add correction of the lower eye into the surgery. The Composite Facelift was not broadly adopted due to a significant increase in swelling and recovery as well as potentially increased risk of lower eyelid complications. There has also been a significant debate within the P...
Would it be too much of me to ask for the deep plane technique to be a requirement, when choosing a s
The benefits of a deep plane facelift
Feb 6, 2020
I agree with your assessment but I have been doing exclusively deep plane facelifts for over 20 years. The most important difference is that a deep plane facelift repositions the tissues rather than pulling on them. The video demonstrates the difference between facelifts in a live surgery.
The caution is that there are very few surgeons who have an extensive experience with deep plane facelifts and it does require a different skill set to perform safely. The surgeons I know...
What is the difference between a deep plane, SMAS and S-Lift?
How to choose between different types of facelifts
Feb 3, 2020
It is often hard to really understand the difference between facelifts from descriptions. I have been doing deep plane facelifts for over 20 years and find the results to be the longest lasting and most natural in my hands.
Along with the excellent answers from other doctors I would suggest viewing my video which uses actual surgery to explain the different facelifts. Warning it is pretty graphic but you will understand the differences.
