Hi,
Sorry to hear about the issues you have been experiencing. From the photos it looks like you had a wedge labiaplasty only and no clitoral hood reduction. It would appear from the photos that there has been poor healing with dehiscence (separation), especially on the right side. This is one of the risks with wedge labiaplasty and why I favour the trim technique. These issues could all be addressed with re-do surgery. This would involve clitoral hood reduction combined with either trim…

Should I see a plastic surgeon or consultant gynaecologist for a labiaplasty?
Plastics or Gynae?

Hi,
Thanks – this is a great question. ‘External’ cosmetic genital surgery on the vulva, such as labiaplasty, can generally be performed by both plastic surgeons and gynaecologists. I would recommend you make your decision based on the surgeon’s training, experience and reviews, rather than their specialty. ‘Internal’ cosmetic genital surgery such as vaginoplasty, in my opinion should be performed by a surgeon who regularly performs vaginal surgery. This would usually be a gynaecologist or a…

Hi,
Thanks for your question. It sounds like you have some scar tissue that’s causing your problems. Scar tissue doesn’t stretch as well as healthy tissue which can make things feel a bit tight and stiff. There are lots of reasons why women can experience pain in their vaginas. In your case, because you describe such specific localised symptoms, it is most likely scar tissue and so, surgery to remove this and reshape your vaginal opening (perineoplasty) is likely to be very effective….

Hi,
Thanks for your question and photos. After any vaginal surgery it is normal to experience some light bleeding or discharge, sometimes for up to 6 weeks after surgery. It is common to be concerned about infection when you see discharge but is simply part of the healing process. If you had an infection, the area might be red, swollen and tender and the discharge foul smelling. If this is the case it is important to see your surgeon for a wound swab to check for infection and a course of…

Hi Sarah,
Thanks for your question. This is a very important issue. Some women with vaginal looseness / laxity actually have a vaginal prolapse. This requires more complex surgery as the prolapse needs to be fixed alongside the vaginal tightening procedure.
Since you have already had a hysterectomy and bladder repair, I would recommend you see a urogynaecologist with experience in re-do prolapse surgery. Sometimes the prolapse on the back and front can actually be due to a prolapse of the…

Hi Isobel,
Thanks for your question and for attaching the photos. Sorry to hear you have been living with this issue for so long – self-confidence / body image issues and irritation from tight clothing are very common in women requesting labiaplasty surgery. I would agree with you – the clitoral hood also appears to be hypertrophied so if undergoing surgery, combining a labiaplasty with clitotral hood reduction has the best chance of giving you the cosmetic appearance you are hoping for….

Hi,
Thanks for your question. From the pictures you have attached, it appears the mid portion of the labia minora protrudes the most. You also have a prominent clitoral hood. Labiaplasty alone will leave a top-heavy appearance. If you choose to undergo surgery, I would recommend combining bilateral trim labiaplasty with clitoral hood reduction.
Hope this helps. Best of luck.
