My advice to patients undergoing mastectomy who don’t want to go through life without a breast but can’t decide on final method of reconstruction, or who faces possibility of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy, is to place either an implant or expander as a “spacer”. There are many advantages, the most important of which is preservation of breast skin. Loss of skin diminishes the quality of future reconstruction.

Displaced facial fractures are generally best repaired within the first few hour of injury before significant swelling occurs but when the bones are more easily mobilized. After that, once the swelling subsides, surgery should be done before bones heal in a fixed displaced position.
