Statement: Dr. Lynn Chiu-Collins is a Stanford-educated facial plastic surgeon in San Francisco. As one of the few facial plastic surgeons in the Bay Area who is double board-certified in facial plastic surgery and head and neck surgery, Dr. Chiu-Collins is uniquely qualified to perform both surgical and nonsurgical procedures on the head, face, and neck. “Everything I do is in the face, head, and neck, and I’m passionate about that,” says Dr. Chiu-Collins. “I think it’s wonderful when your practitioner can really focus and be an expert on those areas.”

She offers a variety of surgical procedures offered at her practice, Union Square Facial Plastic Surgery, including facelifts, rhinoplasty (nose surgery), eye lifts (blepharoplasty), brow lifts, and ear reshaping (otoplasty). Nonsurgical procedures she performs include dermal fillers (such as Restylane and Juvéderm) and other injectables (like Botox and Dysport); Ultherapy for nonsurgical facelifts, eyelifts, and brow lifts, and chemical peels. “We have so many great tools in our armamentarium now for facial rejuvenation and anti-aging,” says Dr. Chiu-Collins. “Not everyone requires surgery.”

That’s why Dr. Chiu-Collins believes it’s so important to seek out a practitioner with expertise in both surgical and nonsurgical approaches to your concerns. For instance, she says, “Doing filler with a surgical level of expertise really allows semi-surgical results nonsurgically,” she says. “After having fillers, some of my patients go home and confuse everybody because they kind of look like they’ve had a facelift or browlift—and nothing’s been done except for having fillers and Botox.”

A Bay Area native and mother of three, Dr. Chiu-Collins graduated from Stanford University with honors and distinctions. She went on to receive her medical degree from the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine, then completed an internship in general surgery and a residency in otolaryngology — head and neck surgery at the University of Washington. She then completed the prestigious fellowship in facial plastic surgery at the University of California, Irvine, under the auspices of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Chiu-Collins is double board-certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery. She’s a member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

At Union Square Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Chiu-Collins believes that open communication is key to receiving the results you’re after. “It’s important to make sure your goals are being heard,” says Dr. Chiu-Collins, who personally performs extensive consultations with all her patients. “The time a provider spends with you during the consultation is very indicative of the time you’ll be given as a patient. You should feel 100 percent comfortable asking all of your questions, and you shouldn’t leave your consultation feeling like you were rushed or that anything was unanswered.”

Is There a Way to Shorten the Area Between the Nose Base and Upper Lip?
Lip Lift with a well-done subnasal incision is an excellent procedure for shortening a long upper lip
Jul 14, 2015
Thank you for your question. I absolutely agree with your statement that "Women with a long space between their nose and lips look older, severe and masculine". A long, heavy or drapey upper lip can unattractively cover the upper teeth, at rest or even when someone smiles. This long lip can be due to aging, due to stretching of the skin from years of dermal filler overuse, or even due to just normal genetics in a younger person. A lip lift surgery is an excellent...
How Long Do the Results of an Ultherapy Procedure Last?
Most people choose to have another Ultherapy Procedure 1.5 to 2 years later
Jul 10, 2015
Thank you for your question. Although Ultherapy does a good job of "turning back the clock", the normal aging process continues of course. In my opinion, the natural aging will never completely catch up to where it would have been had you not done Ulthera. At any given time your skin is still "in a better place" than it would have been had you never had an Ultherapy treatment. Most of our patients like their result and choose to have another treatment 1.5 to 2 years later. We...
Can Ultherapy help with volume loss?
Ultherapy is great for tightening but it does not replace lost volume. Ulthera AND Volume is a great combo!
Jul 10, 2015
Ultherapy is very good at nonsurgically reorganizing your collagen and making your skin look tighter. Ultherapy in the face can help improve the look of the jawline (and early jowling) by tightening and lifting the weight of the lower face soft tissue that is "collapsing" onto the jawline. Ulthera does not do anything for volume replacement. Volume is addressed with the facial fillers like Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane, Radiesse, Perlane or Belotero, or with surgical Fat Transfer....
How long do the results of ultherapy last?
The collagen remodeling from Ultherapy remains, but the aging process continues
Jul 10, 2015
The collagen remodeling from Ultherapy does not go away, however the normal aging process continues. In my opinion, the natural aging will never completely catch up to where it would have been had you not done Ulthera. In other words, at any given time your skin is still "in a better place" than it would have been had you never had an Ultherapy treatment. We tell our patients that Ultherapy is a great way to give your skin mild tightening and improvement but it does not...
Local or General Anaesthesia in Otoplasty?
Otoplasty with Local Anesthesia
Oct 8, 2013
Thank you for submitting your question. Otoplasty can be performed with local anesthesia, moderate sedation, or a general anesthesia. It is extremely well-tolerated under local anesthesia alone, so we perform most otoplasties in our practice this way. We often provide a small amount of oral sedation to make the patient more comfortable. We then proceed with injection of a nerve block and local anesthetic. The patient feels no pain during the procedure. Most...
How to Treat Thin Eyebrows?
Latisse works well for treatment of Thinning Eyebrows, however it is currently considered "off-label"
Oct 8, 2013
Although not FDA-approved for eyebrow application, many patients have demonstrated impressive success with use of Latisse for treatment of thinning eyebrows. Latisse works by lengthening the "growing" phase of the hair growth cycle. You can purchase Latisse from most cosmetic physician's offices, and you should have an evaluation by the physician prior to beginning treatment.

Best of luck to you

Could You Use Latisse for Growing Eyebrows As Well?
Latisse can work on the eyebrows too but it is considered "off-label"
Oct 8, 2013
Although it is not FDA approved for this purpose, many patients have had great results when using Latisse to regrow lost or overplucked hair on their eyebrows.
Can I Continue Using Latisse While Healing from a Brow Lift?
Should be OK to use Latisse after Browlift
Oct 8, 2013
Thanks for your question. Although you will likely have some swelling above the eyes after a browlift, it should not be a problem to continue using Latisse before and after your browlift surgery.

Best wishes and good luck to you for a speedy recovery!

Should You Be Able to Feel Your Earlobes 10 Days After a SMAS Facelift?
Numbness after Facelift is not unusual and should improve over time
Oct 8, 2013
Thank you for your questions. At 10 days after your surgery, it is not unusual to have numbness of your earlobes. It is still early in the healing process and you should still be quite swollen. Your nerves should regain their function over time but it can take several months.

Best wishes and good luck in your recovery!

Crooked Nose After Septorhinoplasty - 3 Months Later?
Postoperative swelling after rhinoplasty can last for several months, but minor revisions may be possible
Oct 8, 2013
Thank you for posting your question. It is still relatively early in your healing process, and swelling after rhinoplasty can last for up to one year. It would be helpful to see your "before" preoperative photos for comparison to see if you had any baseline asymmetry. Close follow up with your plastic surgeon is important so that he/she can see the evolution of the healing and make any appropriate recommendations along the way. It is possible to reduce the size of...
Are the Splints Placed in the Inside of the Nose or the Outside?
Rhinoplasty Splints can be placed on either the inside or outside of the nose depending on what was done
Oct 8, 2013
