Can one plastic surgeon do face and body well?
Jack of all trades...
Jul 19, 2023
Thank you for this excellent question. Although I think it is possible to find a few exceptional plastic surgeons who are truly gifted, experienced and up-to-date in all types of aesthetic plastic surgery, there is something to be said about sub-specialization and dedication to a narrow subset of services that correlate to better and safer outcomes. "Practice makes perfect" and "jack of all trades, master of none" are common phrases and although somewhat generic and over simplified, do make...
Still tight around my chin and ears 12 months after facelift. Can I do anything to help the healing?
Fine balance
Jul 19, 2023
This is the fine balance that has to be achieved in effective facelifting. Aggressive facelifts that involve "over-tightening" of the platysma, "over-resection" of skin will "look great" for a while but introduce a lot of tension in the face and neck that can feel and look "over done". Whatever the case, it is good that you are happy with the way you appear. I would suggest, with the permission of your surgeon, seeking out a lymphatic drainage therapist who might be able to help soften the...
Disappointed, should facelift address lower areas of face & around mouth?
Dissatisfaction with facelift
Jul 19, 2023
Thank you for sharing your experience. It is difficult to comment whether or not a result is good enough or as good as expected as this is to some extent subjective, even though it should be more objective. The degree of correction of the jowls, marionette folds, jawline and neck for example also can depend of age, skin quality, skin type and previous treatments. There is also the matter of surgical technique. I personally believe that the best, most durable lifts are deep plane facelifts...
Can a facelift and rhinoplasty be performed at the same time? 44 y/o
Rhinoplasty with facial rejuvenation procedures
Jul 19, 2023
Thank you for your question. We often perform rhinoplasty with aging face surgery simultaneously for patients who would like to look younger and address concerns with the shape and proportion of their nose. Surgery can take a little longer and you'll have multiple areas of "downtime" that may make the first 7-14 days a little more unpleasant than if the procedures were done in separate stages, but it doesn't increase the overall duration of downtime and you can consolidate your recovery...
Surgeons seen to have their out buzz words for facials. Deep plane, refresher face lift. Are they really
Facelift branding and terminology
Jul 18, 2023
Thank you for this great question! For a patient such as yourself trying to research facelifting and various surgeons who perform facelifts, navigating through the various terms, terminologies and catchy, copyrighted names is an incredibly challenging process. I think it is important to first determine what TYPE of facelifting is being recommended/offered. The three broad categories you should be aware of are: 1) skin only lifts, 2) SMAS facelifts and 3) deep plane facelifts. Very few...
What is the best procedure to lift face and get rid of wrinkles and 11s?
Dynamic wrinkles and surgery!
Jul 18, 2023
Great and very important question! As far as the reduction of forehead, glabellar and crowsfeet wrinkles, procedures such as browlifts and eyelid surgery can certainly help in reducing the gravitational component that sometimes worsens these lines. However, most surgeons will choose not to cut the muscles that lead to those dynamic wrinkles because these muscles actually stabilize brow position and losing their activity or function in a surgical manner may cause the brow to "drift", leading...
Is laser resurfacing okay to perform during a facelift?
Resurfacing lasers and facelifting
Jul 18, 2023
Great question and very relevant! It is absolutely safe to use a resurfacing laser like Erbium or CO2 at the same time as facelifting, as long as there is some consideration given to lightening or reducing the number of passes performed in the preauricular and neck skin, something most surgeons have an understanding of. Tissue loss will only happen if the skin is raised very thin and an aggressive setting on the laser is used on that skin, which is rarely the case! Wishing you a swift recovery!
What kind of facelift do I need?
Early facial aging and the proper management of it!
Jul 18, 2023
Thanks for sharing your photos and your experience! What I notice most in your present day pictures are increased prominence of lower facial jowls, slightly deeper marionette folds and a jawline that isn't as crisp. I know these changes can be quite unsettling and can actually present fairly quickly. Some of it has to do with your genetics, age, hormone changes in your body and various environmental factors, among other factors. I would say that you are a great candidate for a mini lower...
Liposuction and face lift for 44 male. Interested in doing surgery in my 40s rather than later in my 50s
Options for early aging in a male
Jul 18, 2023
Thank you for your question. I have numerous men who come to see me for similar concerns, as well as those who are predominantly concerned with neck or lower face (not both). There are multiple options. If lack of definition along the jawline and neck is your primary concern, you would be a good candidate for neck only procedures such as an excision necklift (meaning skin is removed from behind the ears) or submentoplasty with skin tightening (I use Renuvion for skin contraction, so no skin...
Best anasthetic for older patients to avoid contributihng to any Alzheimers or other dementia?
Anesthesia and dementia
Jul 18, 2023
This is a great question and one that I often get when discussing fairly lengthy facial rejuvenation procedures for my 60+ patients. There are a lot of articles on the web that discuss this topic, referring to various studies that have shown an association between general anesthesia and dementia. It is important to recognize that there are ZERO studies that have shown a direct causal association. There are several studies that do show that elderly patients who received general anesthesia may...
38 y/o considering a facelift - are there any alternative options that will leave a less noticeable scar
Minimally invasive mid face lifting
Jul 18, 2023
Thank you for your question. What you're probably wanting is a mid-face lift and there are surgeons out there that do perform these through temporal incisions and with endoscopic techniques. The difficulty in this approach is that you might get odd folding or bunching in the overlying skin and soft tissues, the degree of release of the facial cutaneous ligaments that tether down the SMAS in that region may be limited and revision rates are high. Although I understand your fear of scarring,...
Order of facial and scalp cosmetic surgeries?
Together or separate? Advice on recommended facial rejuvenation procedures.
Jul 18, 2023
This is a great question. I often touch upon this subject during my facelift consultations. There is real value in performing multiple facial rejuvenation procedures (such as lower facelifts, eyelids, lip lifts, fat transfers, chemical peels, chin implants, hairline lowering procedures) together as patients have to go under anesthesia once (albeit for longer), have only one recovery (albeit more intense downtime) and can start enjoying a more comprehensively rejuvenated face and neck sooner...
If I have an upper & lower facelift (inc. neck) as separate procedures, is this the same as a full facel
What does a "full facelift" entail?
Jul 18, 2023
Thank you for this question as it is one that many people struggle with understanding partly because of how much terminology is floating out there on the web. In essence, you are right that a full facelift probably entails a lower facelift (the main feature which addresses the jowls, jawline and neck) in addition to procedure that rejuvenate the brows and eyelids. On top of that, many patients may also decide to address 1) volume concerns with a facial fat transfer and 2) skin concerns with...
Am I a good candidate for a facelift? Would this be possible?
Facelifting as a viable option for younger individuals with early signs of sagging
Jul 18, 2023
Thank you for your question and for sharing your pictures. I totally see what you're seeing and understand what you're trying to achieve. Many patients with your exact situation will try non-surgical heat based skin tightening treatments, threads and/or fillers to help achieve skin/soft tissue contraction, "lifting" and a more youthful shape. That being said, if you are open to surgery and have realistic expectations of what can be achieved, there is no reason why you couldn't get a lower...
Can Sculptra or a previous mini lower facelift cause complications for a future full facelift?
Collagen stimulating fillers and previous facelifts affecting future surgery
Jul 18, 2023
This is a fantastic question. As a facelift specialist who performs hundreds of primary and revision facelifts on patients who have had previous non-surgical and surgical treatments, I have seen a wide variety of tissue effects related to these previous procedures. Ultimately, you are dealing with scar tissue (which some people will also refer to as "collagen") deposition and this can certainly pose unique challenges to both surgeons and patients. That being said, in experienced hands, risks...
